I often wonder about the nicknames some of us use. The ones like Drizzt4EVR! are pretty obvious, but most of the ones I'm seeing here aren't quite so clear. Might as well start with mine, right?
I joined the Navy in 1988, and because of the field I chose, I spent nearly 2 years in training schools before getting my first shipboard assignment. I was pretty happy about it, and very gung-ho at the time. I was flown out to Hawaii to ride my boat back to home port, and my directive was to qualify for an underway watch (engine room lower level, specifically) so the crew wouldn't be short on the watchbill for the following patrol.
So, I come on board practically giddy with excitement, for the last nine days of an 85 day patrol. The rest of these guys had already been at sea nearly 2.5 months, and were understandably less chipper. But, this was what I'd trained for, and I was just too excited to let anything get to me. I qualified, all smiles, and then we went into port. I was assigned to paint team for refit assist, while we prepped the boat for the other crew to go to sea, still unfazed. After refit assist, we got 3 weeks of R&R. Heck, wasn't anything to cry about in those first 2-3 months of my assignment to the boat.
After R&R, we went into daily training in the off-crew building, and I still came bouncing in with a smile on my face. It was at that point that Larry Hamon, one of the ELT's on my crew, couldn't take it anymore. He stood up in class, as soon as I walked in and practically shouted, "%#@$%#, he's still smiling!! Here he comes, happy-go-skippy..."
And the name stuck. By the end of the day, I was being called Skippy by everyone on crew, chiefs and officers included. Boat nicknames are just a force of nature that you really can't escape. The vast majority of my crewmates never knew my real first name. To everyone on board, I was simply Skippy, and I wore the name with pride.
However, when I choose handles on the internet, very often Skippy is a choice that's unavailable. Since I've loved games my whole life, Gameskippy seemed a natural call, and one that is unique enough that I don't have to compete with anyone to claim it.

Hey, great story Skippy Mine is not nearly as interesting....Back in high school my best pal and I always had these great inside jokes that we thought were just hilarious. Of course, no one else did, but I suppose that's why they're "inside" jokes. Anyway, one day we were walking down the hall to class and we spotted a locker that had some strange graffitti on it. On closer inspection we saw that it read "I've done Phunic!". For some reason we thought this was just the weirdest, most hilarious thing we ever saw...It just made no sense. The phrase stuck in our heads and every once and awhile we would just blurt out, "Yeah, I've done Phunic" in a sort of mock - smug voice. I suppose it's just one of those "had to be there" scenarios, but it became one of our little inside jokes. So, one day I was at the character screen in NWN thinking of a good name, and that popped into my head. I just flipped the phrase around and came up with "Phunic Ivdon". So, now that everyone is aware of what a crazy bastard I am.... Anyone else up for "share time"? ;D

Zunath Zintuachi is a name I used back in my Everquest days on the Firiona Vie server. Zunath was a Vah Shir (cat people) warrior. He was quite evil, and went around killing innocent people along with raiding towns. Now, it's become my online alias for pretty much all of the MMORPGs I've played.
Everquest had an in-game name generator for lazy people, like me, who wanted to jump into the game quickly. I hit it a few times, basically just getting names impossible to pronounce (Jkeahsne, anyone?). I finally found one that at least sounded good, and that was Zanuth. I think the name was taken, so I switched the A and the U around, and ta-dah Zunath!
Zintuachi was the last name of my character, and to be honest I have no idea whatsoever I came to think of it. I always like to match beginning letters for my characters' first and last names, so I guess that's where I started.
Fairly short story, but that's the origin of my name.

Just goes to show you what these filters can do to a perfectly innocuous statement. I've tried editing this twice now, and couldn't figure out why it kept changing what I clearly typed as "my" followed by "assignment" to I disagreeignment. Apparently, the auto filters change the phraze "my azz" to "I disagree" automatically. (Remember to substitute S for Z in that second word.) Even when A-S-S is used as part of a larger word, it would seem.
Makes it awfully hard to discuss my assassin character, huh?
Oops, did it again.
Good story Phun. I was wondering if that should be pronounced "Fun, I see, I've done."

Well now this takes the cake of discussions. I like it... Anyway, Zdm is actually short for OmegaDM... Omega=Z (greek) DM=Dungeon Master .... meaning "last dungeon master". A phrase my group of PnP players started describing me as long ago. Basically, like some one referring to the "last of the mohicans" as the only one left. Since then, the name just stuck with me and mine. It was open for grabs on bioware and many other sites, therefore, I am Zdm, last of a dying breed. .... Zdm

Well I found the "my azz" one. It also changes other stuff to "thingy", "girl thingy", "sleeper", "not a very nice person" and a few others. Also places "*" everywhere. ;D

Well, no-one here is from Scotland, and not even an English person would understand, but here goes... My Father is a minister with a Christian splinter group called the Free Church (how ironical that is) which basically preaches fire and brimstone. We are all going to hell, no matter what, so we may as well spend the majority of our miserable lives telling other people how despicable we are, and why they are going to be seeing us in hell shortly as well. In fact, when my Grandmother (rest her soul) was too ill to go to church at Easter time, my father reminded her that she would burn in hell for all eternity for this transgression. Anyone understand why I am not 100% pro-Christian? Back to the point - when I was eleven, someone had bought me a copy of the DMG for Xmas (the original one with the big Demon on the front). A few months later (not having a clue about what it was talking about) I fell in with a few friends who were playing the game...and lo and behold, I had a hobby! When this started to encroach on my eleven times a week church-going, my father told me that 'My road was folly, and folly leads the merry way to hell.' So there, I have been folly ever since, whether it be on forums or in games. Sorry, not as funny as some, just personal. Folly.

Bender, which is actually short for Cøckbender (had to use a special "o" because a board filter changes the real word to "thingy").
the name Cøckbender is actually defined in an urban dictionary as a tightass, which i really am not. my wife gave me that nickname. . . she actually called me it once. and it stuck since.
i've segued to "Bender" because anymore people don't allow Cøckbender as either a forum name or a character name on their servers. i've been kicked, and even banned a few times from servers because of that name. but i can understand, and besides. . . my friends started calling me "Bender" out of the blue as of a couple years ago.
funny, because Bender is the name of a robot in a cartoon show that i don't even watch. i wasn't familiar with it until somebody explained it to me about 3 months ago. . . . heh, all this time. . .
anyhow, i'm not a pervert, i'm not vulgar, and i rarely ever use profanity.
